The North Harbour Rugby Union (NHRU) is pleased to announce the appointment of James (Jimmy) Maher as the new Head Coach of the North Harbour Rugby Bunnings Warehouse NPC team. Maher brings a wealth of experience, both as a player and a coach, aligning seamlessly with the NHRU's mission of "Improving Lives Through Rugby."
Maher's rugby journey is distinguished by his tenure as a formidable loose forward, during which he played 40 games for Counties Manukau from 2004 to 2007, representing the Pukekohe club, Chiefs A, and the All Blacks Sevens team. Following his playing career, Maher transitioned into coaching, taking roles with the Blues U18 side, serving as head coach for Grammar TEC in the Auckland club competition, and spending several years coaching in Japan. Most recently, he has served as an assistant coach for the Counties Manukau Steelers in the Bunnings Warehouse NPC.
Adrian Donald, CEO of NHRU, expressed enthusiasm about Maher's appointment:
"Jimmy embodies the values and vision of North Harbour Rugby. His extensive experience, both internationally and domestically, coupled with his commitment to community engagement, makes him an ideal leader for our team. We are confident that under his guidance, we will continue to build a team that not only excels on the field but also strengthens our ties within the community."
Gerard van Tilborg, Chair of NHRU, also shared his support:
"We are delighted to welcome Jimmy to the North Harbour family. His philosophy of developing talent from within and fostering a strong team culture aligns perfectly with our approach of building aspirational pathways towards higher honours within our community. We look forward to a successful future with Jimmy at the helm."
Jimmy Maher commented on his new role:
"I am honoured to take on the role of Head Coach at North Harbour Rugby. The union's commitment to 'Improving Lives Through Rugby' resonates deeply with my own values. I am eager to work with the talented players and dedicated staff to build a team that not only achieves success on the field but also makes a positive impact in our community."
Maher will officially commence his duties on April 14th, 2025, as the team prepares for the upcoming Bunnings Warehouse NPC season.
