The 1B championship final took place at North Harbour Stadium on Friday night, with Northcote taking on Kaipara as the curtain-raiser to the North Harbour ITM Cup fixture versus Wellington. The game begun very slowly with Kaipara having most of the possession, however despite this advantage, they struggled to make any impression on the defence. With a lot of unforced errors plaguing the game early on, it took 16 minutes before points were scored, through Northcote first-five David Halaufia to give his side a 3-0 lead. A large number of set-pieces as a result of errors dominated the rest of the half and as half-time drew nearer, Northcote managed one last break through a great counter attack to put flanker Harry Scherger over for a try. The successful conversion increased the score to 10-0 at the break. The second half brought on more attacking and running rugby, opening up the game with fewer stoppages. Kaipara created their first try scoring opportunity of the game through fullback Andy Hill, who broke through 3 tackles and scampered away to score, reducing the gap to 5 points. With the game spread through the entire length of the paddock, both sides found themselves with opportunities to score, Northcote capitalising on two penalty chances to stretch out the score by 6 points to 16-5. Not long after Northcote put even more points on Kaipara, this time through hooker Kafo Havili, as a result of strong and persistent pick and go phase play. With the score 21-5 as the clock ticked down, Northcote had the win secured, and despite a late Kaipara try through replacement lock Stanley Muru and first five Billy May kicking the conversion, Northcote took the game and the championship title 21-12. The game lacked excitement and action in the early stages, but it was a great battle and a true final with the game much more even than the score suggested, where the victors Northcote simply took more opportunities and turned them into points to seal the game.

Orewa travelled to Northcote on Saturday 20 August for the semi-finals of the North Harbour 1B competition. Northcote, losing to Orewa 6-16 in their last encounter, looked to change that result and book their place in the final, while Orewa intended to overcome their lower ranking on the table and cause somewhat of an upset. It was Northcote however that looked to take control early after good pressure just minutes after kick off with flanker Harry Scherger to charging down a kick, allowing hooker Kafo Havili to pick up and score the try giving Northcote a 5-0 lead after 5 minutes. Orewa’s game was plagued by mistakes, which hindered any chances they had to make an impact on the home side. The second try of the game came again through Northcote, this time blindside flanker Harley Robb drove over for the try on the back of great running by the Northcote backline. The resulting conversion and a late penalty by first-five David Halaufia, made the score 13-0 at Halftime. Orewa began the second half much like the first, with more mistakes, leaving try scoring opportunities begging. This combined with their number of turned down kicks at goal began to manifest, as they still had no points on the board midway through the second half. Northcote however continued to play fast and aggressive rugby, and after fullback Brandon Sucu re-gathered a great chip and chase, he offloaded to second-five Hayden Helleur who ran in his side’s third try under the posts. With the score 20-0, Orewa looked completely out of the contest, but they did manage to stay in the game after impressive replacement winger Hunter Nelson, drove over the line after breaking numerous tackles. Now within two converted tries, Orewa still had chances to comeback, but as they continued to kick away possession Northcote had a lot of time to run the ball and this eventually paid off, with replacement hooker James Viau charging down a kick, allowing Helleur to scoop up the loose ball and run away to score his second. With time up on the clock, and Northcote with a place in the final secured, were stretched out wide after some lazy defence, which allowed Orewa to score a consolation try in the corner to fullback Sam Whittaker. Northcote looked very convincing in their 30-12 victory and will feel confident heading in to their final against Kaipara College. Orewa will be very disappointed in a poor display, capping off a difficult season for their side.

Glenfield College was the scene of the first 1B semi final between top qualifier Glenfield College and fourth place qualifier Kaipara College. Glenfield were coming off a win against lowly Long Bay College and Kaipara College had suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Northcote College the previous week. Played in stunning conditions the match started with Glenfield College pining Kaipara in their half for the first 20 minutes. Glenfield were unable to capitalise on having the lions share of possession during this time through making countless errors and missing two penalty kicks in handy positions. A determined effort from the Kaipara forward pack on defence and calm kicking from Kaipara first five Billy May allowed Kaipara to absorb a heap of pressure. Against the run of play Kaipara were able to force an error from a kick chase and were able to capitalise a few phases later with impressive second five Duke Hemara crashing through the Glenfield ruck defence to score a try and secure the first points of the game. A missed conversion from a fairly handy position to kept the score to 5-0 Kaipara. This try brought a change in momentum in the game. The Kaipara forward pack began to assert themselves and it was Glenfield’s turn to absorb some pressure. After two unnecessary breakdown penalties from the Glenfield loose forwards Kaipara were able to land a penalty goal to take the score to 8-0 in Kaipara's favour. The rest of the first half was played in the middle of the field with neither side asserting themselves. Only a penalty kick from Glenfield First Five, Willy Unga, was added to the score. The halftime score 8-3.
With both teams competition futures on the line it was Kaipara who came out of the gates quickest in the second half. After scoring an early penalty goal Kaipara were again able to take advantage of some casual kick reception play from Glenfield College in their back three. Kaipara were able to turn the ball over and after some enterprising link play lead by centre Tre Sinsa, outstanding First Five Billy May was able to crash through a half gap for Kaipara's second try of the match. The try was unconverted taking the score out to 16-3 in Kaipara's favour. The rest of the game turned into a dour battle of attrition with Glenfield throwing everything at the Kaipara defence. Glenfield were able to score three unconverted tries to U16 representative prop Lomano Manuuahapai, wing Eugene Noah and open side flanker Jordan Eckhold-Brown. Kaipara added two penalty kicks to their total to take the score to 22-18. The final 5 minutes was a frantic period with Glenfield hammering at the Kaipara line. A gallant Kaipara pack was rewarded by holding the ball up in the final play of the game. When the whistle blew, Kaipara celebrations were wild as they celebrated a well earned victory. Glenfield finished the game scoring more tries, creating more try scoring opportunities, attempting more shots at goal and dominating territory and possession statistics, but were on the wrong side of the ledger. What came through in the end was an under dog Kaipara team who played with a heap of passion and took advantage of their limited opportunities. Kaipara go through to play a very strong Northcote in the 1B final. The question remains are they able to repeat this giant killing performance? They've proven that in finals football, anything can happen with the right attitude and execution.

Glenfield - L. Manuuahapai, E. Noah and J. Eckhold-Brown tries; W. Unga pen.

1A Semi-Finals – Massey HS vs Westlake
BHS (SF2) and Rosmini
College vs Takapuna GS

Westlake travelled to Massey on Saturday in the 2nd Semi-Final of the North Harbour 1A competition. This looked to be the tighter contest of the two semi’s, as the last time the two sides met, a late penalty was all that separated them in a 1 point win to Massey. Massey went into the game with a better record and form, however Westlake have shown they can get within an inch of the top sides, and a victory for them was a very achievable goal. Massey began the game with the wind at their backs, and this showed early pinning the visitors back in their own 22 forcing Westlake first-five Vann Wallace to make repeated clearances. However, Massey continued to run the ball back at Westlake and this paid off early, after an excellent running move in the Massey backline created the overlap, and sent winger Tevita Li over for a try in the corner. Westlake then showed their tactics for the game to retain possession, keeping the ball tight and secure with repetitive pick and go’s and forward runners. The individual brilliance of Tevita Li has been present all season for Massey, scoring a large number of tries and breaking the line more often than not. This game was no exception, as just before half-time he evaded three tacklers to calmly stroll under the posts for his second. These two tries and a lone Westlake penalty made the score 12-3 at the half-time break.
The second half arrived with Westlake now had the wind at their backs, however they didn’t use it to their advantage. The game was trapped in midfield for much of the 35 minutes as neither side could break through the defence. Problems at scrum-time for the Westlake side resulted in tight head hooks to Massey and several resets, wearing down the Westlake forward pack. As the game continued its slow pace, both sides traded penalties to take the score to 15-6 heading in to the last 10 minutes. A realisation of the ‘win or go home’ stakes, the Westlake side put in a huge push towards the end of the game, and with two minutes left on the clock they gained a penalty and chose to kick for goal. This proved to be a very costly error, as the Massey side gained possession, and held on to the ball until time was up and kicking it in to touch to take the win 15-9. The win earned them a place in the 1A final against other semi-final winner, Rosmini. Westlake will be disheartened by the loss, but their poor choice of tactics at times, especially with the winds at their backs, and problems at set-piece led to their demise and Massey, the better side all season, deserved their place in the final.

Rosmini secured a comfortable 35-6 win over 4th qualifier Takapuna in Semi-Final 1. Takapuna started strongly after a rousing haka capitalising on 15 minutes worth of pressure and territory by scoring the first points through a penalty in front of the posts by Takapuna 1st five Joey McDonald. Rosmini replied with a well worked try after several phases were finished off on the left wing by Elliot Bryers. Continued pressure by Rosmini allowed the forwards to show their dominance with a driven lineout from the 22m line that ended with hooker Nat Larmer scoring to finish the drive. Rosmini 1st five Ignacio Costa showed his pace in the 30th minute when he finished off a try started from a great break by 2nd five Luke Reed from inside his own half. Takapuna were next to score with their second penalty of the match by McDonald close to half time but sustained pressure saw Nat Larmer score his second try of the day, finishing off another lineout drive by Rosmini’s pack taking the score to 22-6 to Rosmini.
Rosmini took 10 more minutes to score in the second half, capitalising on loose play at the breakdown resulting in a penalty to fullback Ben Hyatt-Brown. Takapuna kept battling and proved hard to compete against, particularly at the breakdown as the 2nd half moved on. The stalemate was finally broken with 15 minutes to go when tight head Tyler Golightly drove over from 5 metres out to score his first ever try for Rosmini 1st XV in his third and final season in the team. The forward tussle continued and indiscipline saw both Rosmini and Takapuna with players in the sin-bin. Some clever kicking by Rosmini’s Luke Reed with good pressure from winger Kenan Stephenson and half-back Matt Moxley put Rosmini within striking distance with only minutes to go. The ensuing drive led to the last try of the match for reserve loose forward Matt Pivac taking the final score to 35-6 in favour of Rosmini to secure top qualifying sport for the 1A final at Rosmini College 1pm Saturday 13 August .

1A Match of the Day – Rosmini College vs Massey HS
by Toby Hurley
Massey High School were looking to steal top spot in the North Harbour 1A competition on Saturday as they travelled to Rosmini for a season defining clash. Massey, 3 points behind Rosmini, could gain top spot for the semi’s with a win and looked determined to do so, however Rosmini also looked up for the challenge and the encounter promised to be a good one. Rosmini, in their usual home game fashion, came out with huge aggression and determination to put early pressure on the Massey side, and it didn’t take long before they had first points on the board through a penalty off the boot of fullback Ben Hyatt-Brown. The game then began to settle down as pre-match nerves wore off, and the anticipated great battle began to develop. It was Massey who struck back and made the first try-scoring breakthrough of the game, when winger Tevita Li went over in the corner after a long period of sloppy Rosmini defence. Both sides then exchanged penalties, with Massey still leading 8-6 heading towards halftime. Just before the half-time whistle however, Rosmini used their powerful line-out drive to push over hooker Nat Larmer for their first try of the match. Hyatt-Brown made the conversion and Rosmini held the lead at the break 13-8.
The second half proved to be an even more intense battle than the first as the physicality and intensity rose from both sides. Massey’s scrum looked very impressive winning three against the head, using their powerful forward pack to their advantage. Just as Massey began to gain continuity in their play they lost two players in quick succession to the sin bin and gave a huge opportunity to Rosmini on which to capitalise. That’s exactly what the home side did, as once again Rosmini used their line-out drive to send Nat Larmer over for his second try of the day. Down by 10 points with two men in the sin bin, the game seemed almost definitely out of reach for the Massey side as the clock ticked down towards full time. Despite this, Massey gained one man back from the sideline and managed to score one last try through Number 8 Abraham Papali’i, to end the game, but Rosmini emerged victorious 18-13. Massey will be disappointed in their backline play, which struggled under immense pressure from Rosmini’s defence, but they will be pleased with their set-piece play from the forwards but now face Westlake in a home semi-final. Rosmini once again rose to the occasion in a big match under pressure, and confirmed a top of the table standing and a home semi-final against Takapuna.

Long Bay College hosted the 2011 secondary school girls 10-aside final against Hato Petera College on Monday 11 July. Long Bay had contested the final a number of times and won it jointly in 2003 with Massey however for Hato Petera it was new pastures, first time in the secondary school girls grade and first time in the finals. Long Bay was out to get their name on the trophy for the first time in 9 seasons after a solid performance through both rounds. First blood went to Long Bay and at the end of the first half on a muddy in patches field in sunny conditions it was two tries a piece with the difference being a conversion to LBC, 12-10. LBC came out running at the beginning of the second half and chalked up three unanswered tries taking the score to 29-10, Hato bounced back with a further try which was answered by LBC giving them an unassailable lead and final score of 34-15. The Long Bay side had superior fitness which allowed them to run the ball, plus their passes were sticking and with the ball getting wide, the tries came. Hato were the bigger side and worked hard at the ruck and mall getting the turnovers which bought them three tries. Player of the day was Georgia Hale for Long Bay with strong runs and excellent ball skills scored 4 tries.

1A Match of the Day - Takapuna Grammar School vs. Mahurangi College
by Toby Hurley
Semi-finals spots were on the line on Saturday, as Mahurangi made the long trip south to face Takapuna at home. Both sides have shown their capabilities throughout this season getting close to, and occasionally upsetting the stronger teams in the competition. With both sides performing haka’s to each other pre-game everything looked set for a great encounter. The game started very slowly with both sides making errors which happened often at critical times and being unable to capitalise on great scoring opportunities. Mahurangi, playing with a strong wind in the first half didn’t use it well enough and found themselves pinned on defence many times, struggling to make good clearances. Towards the end of the first half Mahurangi had two opportunities to get on the board through penalties; however first-five Kayne Middleton couldn’t convert. TGS also had one chance to take the lead, also through a penalty and halfback Raniera Takarangi made no mistake, giving TGS a 3-0 halftime lead.
As the second half came around, so did more rain and wind making conditions extremely difficult. However, now against the wind, Middleton made up for his two missed penalties in the first half, landing a great one from out wide to tie the game up at 3-3. Handling errors continued to plague the game and both sides struggled to gain any continuity in their open play. Mahurangi looked threatening many times throughout the second half however, a mix of great Takapuna defence and poor execution denied them any tries. Just as the game looked bound for a draw, TGS finally made the breakthrough after a well executed scrum, followed by skilful movement of the ball right through the backline allowing fullback Cameron Puterangi to break the line and score. Takarangi converted to give the home side a 7 point lead. As the clock started to tick down towards fulltime, Mahurangi’s attacks became desperate and when a last minute break gave Mahurangi a chance to score, a handling error once again lost them the chance. This was the story of the Mahurangi play throughout the game and they will be very disappointed to go down 10-3. Takapuna now comfortably hold 4th spot and will make semi-finals where they will look to yet again upset a top 2 side.

In the other 1A fixtures, Massey thumped hapless Rangitoto 62-3 and Rosmini just edged their old rivals Westlake 13-11. Takapuna has closed up on Mahurangi on the points table and should beat Rangitoto this Saturday to secure 4th spot as Mahurangi face a resurgent Westlake. Rosmini and Massey face off in the final encounter of round 2 in the Match of the Day, to decide the top spot going into the semi-finals to be held 6 August.
In the 1B second round, Orewa comfortably beat Long Bay 29-19 and Northcote surprised Glenfield mid-week with an 8-6 win to take the Benton Cup. The Kaipara vs Whangaparaoa fixture was postponed due to Whangaparaoa’s Australian tour.
In the 1C, Kristin just edged Birkenhead 7-0, Albany thumped Hato Petera 33-0 and Westlake 2nd XV comfortably beat feisty Kingsway 32-12. Massey 2nd XV had the bye.
In the 2011 Secondary Schools Girls final Long Bay won well showing plenty of running and ball skills over hard-working first time finalists Hato Petera 34-15.

1A Match of the Day – Westlake BHS vs Takapuna Grammar
By Toby Hurley
Revenge was on the minds of the Westlake 1st XV on Saturday as they travelled to Takapuna Grammar. In their last meeting a fortnight ago, TGS came out shock victors 12-10, and with the home side at full strength, looked to execute a similar performance in this encounter. The belief and confidence in their ability to match the Westlake side could be seen in the fierce haka performed pre-game and it looked to be the makings of a great contest .The game started slowly and evenly with territory and possession spread between the two sides. The first half looked as though its only points would be the result of penalties as neither side had many opportunities to score tries. Westlake’s half-back Brady Page kicked 3 from 3 to begin a flawless day with the boot, ending the game with a 100% success rate and 18 points. Just before half-time however, the first try of the match was scored after a great burst down the sideline and a subsequent lineout steal, saw Westlake flanker Sam Quinn stroll over for an easy try. Westlake went into the second half leading 16-0.
The start of the second half did little to help the TGS cause, after a lack of urgency to clear under pressure led to a charge down which was pounced on by Westlake Number 8 Marvin Boyce. This extended the lead to 23-0, a four try buffer. TGS tried to attack both through their backs and forwards but were unable to make any real impression on the defence which limited their opportunities to get points on the board. Another penalty and a late try to replacement Westlake winger Josh Pickering –Ross, after a skilful line break by pivot Jamie Williamson, wrapped up a convincing win for Westlake 33-0. As well as making up for the last meeting with TGS, a vast improvement in their kicking game, and mental attitude has placed Westlake in a much better position heading into the finals. TGS will need to secure wins against the two lower teams in the competition to confirm their place in the top 4.

In the other 1A fixtures, Rosmini thrashed hapless Rangitoto 75-0 and Massey survived a close call at Warkworth to just beat Mahurangi 12-8.
In the opening fixtures of the 1B second round, Glenfield defeated Kaipara 39-29 in a high scoring match, Whangaparaoa edged their more fancied neighbours Orewa 7-0 and Northcote held out Long Bay 15-11.
In the 1C Albany 1st XV, Westlake 2nd XV and Massey 2nd XV have joined the division with Kristin, Birkenhead, Hato Petera and Kingsway. Massey 2nd XV beat Kristin by default, Westlake 2nd XV comfortably beat Birkenhead 22-6 and Kingsway drew 3 all Albany. Hato Petera had the bye.

1A Match of the Day – RANGITOTO vs. GLENFIELD
By Toby Hurley
Rangitoto and Glenfield, two sides struggling in the 1A competition this year went into battle at Rangitoto on Saturday. Both sides had their place in the competition on the line, as the loser faced relegation to the 1B division alongside last placed Orewa. The match proved to be a classic game of two halves as Glenfield dominated the first and Rangitoto the second. Although Glenfield controlled the first half it was Rangitoto who drew first blood through a try by livewire Number 8 Taylor Temperton. However the early lead was quickly reversed as Glenfield scored twice in quick succession firstly through flanker Jordon Eckhold-Brown, and then again through first five William Unga, after great attacking play. Just before half-time Glenfield had their third as flanker Bobby Parkinson scooped up his charged down ball to dive over for a try. Glenfield led 15-7 at half-time.
The second half proved a totally different story as Rangitoto came out with a lot more aggression and urgency which was absent in the first spell. They managed to get first blood again with their stand-out performer Taylor Temperton crossing for his second. Both sides attacked furiously but neither could make any significant breaks in the opposition defence. Glenfield looked as though they would come back to score, but incredible scrambling defence by the Rangitoto backs, stopped a certain try. This was the inspiration that Rangitoto needed as they took the lead, yet again through their number 8 Temperton who scored his hat-trick, after another one of his many storming line breaks. Glenfield’s missed conversions proved to be costly, as Rangitoto held the lead 19-15. A last gasp attempt to score by Glenfield in the last play of the game came to nothing as Rangitoto held on for a well deserved win 19-15 to keep their place in the competition, while Glenfield return back to the 1B division after their short but determined spell in the premier grade.
Rangitoto – T. Temperton 3 tries; C. Whitfield 2 con
Glenfield – J. Eckhold-Brown, W. Unga, B. Parkinson tries.
In the other 1A fixtures, battling Takapuna upset Westlake 12-10, Rosmini thumped Orewa 51-3, and Massey comfortably beat Mahurangi 43-11. Westlake defeated Rangitoto 8 June in a deferred game 50-12. With one round to go Northcote, Long Bay and Whangaparaoa have secured a position in the 1B division for the second round, however Kristin, Birkenhead and Kaipara are battling for the last spot. Kristin and Kaipara play in the final fixtures of round 1 this Saturday and Birkenhead faces lowly Kingsway.

1A Match of the Day - MASSEY vs ROSMINI
By Toby Hurley
Rosmini travelled out west on Saturday to take on Massey in a much anticipated top of the table clash. The position atop the standings was up for grabs, as the only two unbeaten teams in the competition went head to head. The shocking conditions, persistent wind and rain, meant the game was dominated by a forwards battle. It proved to be Rosmini who won this battle early on, showing a lot more aggression and cohesion than their bigger counter-parts, allowing them to dominate with rolling mauls and ruck clear-outs. Despite Rosmini’s early dominance the game remained stuck in midfield for much of its duration, however it was Rosmini who made the first break through, and following a good line-out win, hooker Nat Larmer drove over for the try. Massey did manage to remain in contention with a late penalty to Jordan Jacobs taking the score to 5-3 at the half.
The second half proved to be again dominated by the Rosmini forward pack, with their rolling mauls gaining up to 30 metres at a time. With the Massey side struggling to cope with the conditions and becoming frustrated at being unable to use their strength in the backline, Rosmini half-back Nico Costa took the advantage, scoring unopposed from a sniping run from the base of an attacking scrum. This was the final scoring act of the game, which ended 10-3 in Rosmini’s favour, a relatively close result not reflective of the game itself, with Rosmini completely dominant. Massey was out of sorts, disjointed for most of the game and unable to combine and work in unison. They will need to work on their set-piece moving on, which was well below their normal standards and attributed to the loss. Rosmini however have impressed with their intensity and team play and deserve to be at the top of the 1A ladder, remaining as the only unbeaten team so far this season.
Massey – J. Jacobs pen
Rosmini – N. Larmer, N. Costa tries.
In the other 1A fixtures, Orewa chalked up their first win over Glenfield 21-3 and Mahurangi jumped into the top 4 with an upset win over Takapuna 22-7 at home. Rangitoto and Westlake play 8 June to complete this round. With one round to go the bottom three teams, Rangitoto, Orewa and Glenfield are battling to avoid relegation to 1B for the second round. Rangitoto and Glenfield play off and the winner will secure a place in 1A. Orewa face the first round leader Rosmini and need an unlikely win to stay in 1A.
In the 1B fixtures, table topping Whangaparaoa slumped to their first loss to improving Kristin 7-15, Birkenhead surprised Kaipara 15-8, and Long Bay comfortably defeated Hato Petera 28-0. Northcote will play Kingsway 15 June to complete this round. With two rounds to go it is becoming congested at the top to qualify for the 1B second round, or be relegated to 1C division. Northcote has the easier finish with Whangaparaoa and Long Bay having more difficult fixtures, and Kristin might be the surprise package.

1A Match of the Day - WESTLAKE vs MASSEY
By Toby Hurley
Top of the table Massey travelled to Westlake on Saturday, looking to remain unbeaten this season. For Westlake this was an important chance to really see where they stood, in relation to the frontrunners of the competition. The match started slowly offering little to the spectators, who only witnessed a few penalties in the first 20 minutes. However it was Massey who managed to score first, through exceptional flanker Dylan Masters after a great counter-attack. This was soon followed by another somewhat opportunist Massey try, as centre Richard McQuarrie went over, after a great draw and pass by Ieti Tago. Two Westlake penalties were all that kept them in the game, with Massey in front at half-time 12-6.
The second half showed a lot of promising attacks by both sides, although neither could capitalise early on. Westlake’s first real try-scoring opportunity came from brilliant individual play by Ben Bugg, kicking down into Massey territory, chasing and putting pressure on the Massey fullback causing a charge down which enabled flanker Sam Quinn to dive over for the try. Westlake were now coming back into the game, however Massey struck back soon after to neutralise the Westlake momentum, with a great try to Ieti Tago who broke through 3 lines of Westlake defence. Massey, with confidence and drive swung the match back in their favour and looked to have put the game out of reach as Dylan Masters went over for his second try. Westlake however, where not prepared to give in and after over 5 minutes hard on attack, they finally broke the Massey line, with fullback Jamie Williamson scoring under the posts. With the score 24-20 heading into the last 10 minutes, the game was up for grabs, but Westlake seemed to undo all of their hard work, when a sloppy lineout performance allowed an easy Massey try to winger Pierre Pili. This try sunk any Westlake hopes, Massey taking the game 29-20 to remain unbeaten this season and looking like the team to beat for the championship. Westlake however have faced two losses so far and will need to bounce back if they want to have the chance to retain their title in 2011.

Takapuna Grammar vs. Glenfield College
By Toby Hurley
A fierce haka face-off set the tone on Saturday as Takapuna took on Glenfield at home. Glenfield, new to the 1A division this year looked to grab their second win of the season as did the home side. Both sides looked to use a kicking game early, resulting in several lineout’s, and numerous dropped balls in the drizzly conditions. The resulting scrums proved very even early on and with both sides trading penalties midway through the first half, a close game looked likely. Takapuna had other ideas, eventually dominating for a convincing win. Takapuna began to rely less on their kicking game and constantly used their backs, spreading the ball wide. This resulted in a great team try by halfback Raniera Takarangi following a storming line break by fullback Cameron Puterangi. Within the space of 7 minutes Takapuna winger Logan O’Toole had a double, the result of non- stop Takapuna attack, with second five Sean Wainui setting up both tries, taking the score to 20-6 going at the break.
Just minutes into the second half O’Toole was in for his hat-trick, and the game seemed all but over with Glenfield unable to make any impression on the Takapuna defence. However a charged down kick gave them their first real try scoring opportunity of the game and they capitalised on this, with hooker Lazlo Unyi scoring in the corner making the score 25-11. Other than another late try from Glenfield’s reserve inside back Jacob Wilson, the second half was all Takapuna’s as they ran in 4 more tries, almost all a result of sloppy defence from Glenfield. Glenfield seemed to struggle with the pace of the game, brought on by a Takapuna side that looked a lot better than in their previous two outings. Number 8 Cameron McLachlan was Takapuna’s standout performer in the 47-18 win, showing his ability not only at the set piece and at ruck time but also by exhibiting a high level of skill while running and passing the ball. Takapuna look much improved and ready to attack the top teams in the standings, and although outclassed, Glenfield are a team with potential and should be watched by all teams as they gain experience at this level of rugby.
Takapuna – L. O’Toole 3, R. Takarangi, L. Ryan, A. Batt, K. Von Sturmer-Karanui, S. Wainui tries; R. Takarangi 2 pen, S. Wainui conv
Glenfield – L. Unyi, J. Wilson tries; J. Leaf 2 pen, conv
The other 1A games were very one-sided affairs with Massey putting away Rangitoto 45-10, Westlake thumping Orewa 69-3, and Rosmini comfortably beat Mahurangi 40-7. Westlake defeated Glenfield 31-5 in the first of the mid-week fixtures held 18 May. The mid-week round is scheduled on or before 25 May.

1A Match of the Day - ROSMINI vs WESTLAKE
By Toby Hurley
One of the most anticipated match ups of the season took place on Saturday as Rosmini hosted defending champions Westlake. With the Woodhouse Shield up for grabs, the stakes were high for both sides wanting early season advantage over their rival. The two sides showed very different styles early on with Rosmini preferring to spread it wide and use their backs, while Westlake tended to keep it tight, in their experienced forward pack. Neither of these styles proved to be more effective early on as the sides were only separated by 3 points with Westlake leading after a couple of penalties by Westlake’s Brady Page and one by Rosmini’s Ben Hyatt-Brown, midway through the first half. The game changed however when Rosmini’s persistent running attack paid off as Ben Hyatt-Brown, who scored all of his sides points, ran in an easy try from a Rosmini overlap. Westlake continued to struggle defending the constant Rosmini attack, however managed to keep Rosmini from scoring before halftime, leaving Rosmini in front 11-9.
The second half exposed the best tactics to use in the conditions with Rosmini constantly using the wind at their backs to pin Westlake back in their own half, something that the visitors failed to do in the first half. This gave Westlake very few scoring opportunities, and the score only ticked along with a few penalties to either side. Going into the final quarter, the result looked ominous for Westlake who were struggling to get out of their own half and down 17-9. However the Westlake side rallied and after a good lineout and keeping the ball in the forwards for several phases, Captain Sam Quinn received a good pass to beat his man to score. The missed conversion made the score 17-14 and the dynamics of the game changed. With just a few minutes left Westlake looked to have lost it after great lineout pressure from Rosmini forced a turnover. But to Westlake’s credit their fighting spirit showed yet again as with time up on the clock a desperate Westlake charge towards Rosmini’s line resulted in an excellent try in the corner by replacement winger Ben Bugg, Westlake trailing by one with a chance to win the game with the kick. It was a huge ask for halfback Brady Page to kick the winning points from the sideline and he was unable to do so, Rosmini emerging victorious 23-22 in a truly great battle with both sides fighting to the end. Rosmini’s ability to pressure Westlake constantly and minimise their opportunities to score, as well as using the conditions and their strengths wisely, enabled them to win, retain the Woodhouse Challenge Shield and establish a favourites tag, moving forward for the rest of the season.
Rosmini – B. Hyatt-Brown try; B. Hyatt-Brown 6 pen
Westlake – S. Quinn, Ben Bugg tries; B. Page 3 pen, J. Beasley pen

1A Match of the Day - Rosmini vs. Takapuna Grammar
By Toby Hurley
Both sides looked to kick off 2011 successfully, as Rosmini hosted Takapuna on Saturday and this attitude showed early as both sides played aggressively, wanting the first round win. Rosmini demonstrated first half dominance in all areas of the game taking control at the set piece as well as in general play and fullback Ben Hyatt-Brown kicked an early penalty to put his side ahead. Despite the large penalty count against the home side Takapuna could only capitalise on one of these to gain 3 points. A break midway through the first half by Rosmini second five Ryan Kennedy was quickly followed by a storming drive over the line for hooker Nat Larmer to score. Larmer, one of Rosmini’s stand out performers, quickly followed up with for his second try of the day as Takapuna struggling with their lineout, were driven back by a rolling maul which proved too strong for the Takapuna defence. Just before half time Rosmini captain and flanker Ryan Thompson, capitalised on a quick tap opportunity to scamper through non-existent defence to wrap up the half, leaving Rosmini in control at the break 24-3. The second half was a continuation of the trend set in the first half, with Takapuna camped in their own territory for most of the half. Despite Rosmini being reduced to 13 men with two sin-bins, Takapuna was unable to extend their score. An easy late try by Elliot Bryars extended the score even more, and put the result beyond doubt 32-3. Number 8 Charles Elton and hooker Nat Larmer were the pick of the Rosmini side while halfback Raniera Takarangi provided some spark in a struggling Takapuna side. Overall an easy victory and a dominant display by the Rosmini side who will move on to face Westlake next week in a repeat of last year’s final.
Rosmini – N. Larmer 2, R. Thompson, E. Bryars tries; B. Hyatt-Brown 3 con, 2 pen
Takapuna – R. Takarangi pen
In the other 1A fixtures Westlake hung on to win 28-22 despite a second-half come-back from Mahurangi, Massey thumped newly promoted Glenfield 60-10, and Rangitoto, also returning to 1A put away last year’s semi-finalist Orewa, 20-13.
