The Goldfields Rugby Club is an independent club within the Thames Valley area, formed to promote and foster junior rugby in the same way the Barbarians Club in Auckland and the Crusaders Club in Waikato. The Goldfields Rugby Club wanted to provide a representative opportuntiy for players Under 13 years old in a lighter weight category than the U55kg Roller Mills Tournament and so the Goldfields Invitational Tournament was established in 1970. Originally only three teams played in the Tournament but it has since expanded to twelve. Teams compete in two sections over three consecutive weekends iin September, with the finals day traditionally being held at Te Aroha. To be eligible to for the team, players must be Under 45Kg, Under 13 years of age on the 1st of January in the year of the Tournament and be in year 7 at school and be registered NHRU junior players playing normal Saturday club rugby. North Harbour has a proud history at the Goldfields tournament winning in 1988, 1990, 1992, 1993, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, and 2004. In 2006 they were winners of the McMahon shield for sportsmanship on and off the field. |
